This whole body bone scan image is created when a patient ingests a small amount of short lived radioactive material.   This area of diagnostics is called nuclear medicine.  The radiopharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine emit ('give off') gamma rays, which are a high-energy type of radiation. Gamma rays can be detected by a specialized gamma ray camera.
