  • An x-ray of a gas pump nozzle.
    K08X-gasspump-BR.jpg
  • A Schlieren image of a carbon dioxide gas leaving a high preasure tank. To increase the schlieren effect, the balloon is filed with pure carbon dioxide gas. The carbon dioxide gas has a different index of refraction than air, so the mixing can be clearly seen. The schlieren image identifies areas of different temperature by using the change in the index of refraction of a fluid due to a change in temperature. This image was captured using a high speed flash with a duration of 1/1,000,000th of a second.

  • This is a demonstration used to show the principle of heat of compression. This is the physical process that makes Diesel engines possible. To work the demonstration, a small sample of cotton is placed in the chamber. The plunger is then forced down and held in place with considerable force. The air in the chamber is forced into a very small volume, thus heating the air above the flash temperature of the Cotton. The same process take place in a Diesel engine, but the fuel is oil. The Diesel engine is much more efficient that a gasoline engine. .

  • A quack medical device used to restore hair, cure cancer, increase intelligence, and cure gout. The device is actually a Tesla coil used to excite a tube filled with low pressure neon gas. The device had no medical advantages. This device was sold under a number of name including the Violet ray. Sold from the 1930's until the late 1970's..

  • A physical reaction where candy mint mentos are dropped into diet soda. The sugar coatings on the mints acts like a perfect nucleation site for the dissolved carbon dioxide in the soda to turn into bubbles. The result is the majority of the carbon dioxide changes from liquid to gas form in just a few seconds. This sudden change of phase causes a plume of soda to be ejected from the bottle at great force causing the soda to make a fountain two meters high.

  • This image is part of a sequence where a man over inflates a balloon until it burst. The image was taken with a high speed flash system. The motion is effectively frozen in time due to the short duration of the flash (1/20,000 th of a second). The balloon was filled with a few milliliters of water before it was inflated. When the balloon is popped, the gas quickly expands and cools. This cooling converts the water vapor in the balloon into suspended water droplets which can be seen as a cloud.

  • A car spark plug firing. The spark plug is the trigger that causes the gasoline to burn at a specific time in the cars internal combustion engine. The spark plug fires and give the gas/air mixture the activation energy to start to burn. This is a critical component in the thermodynamic cycle of an internal combustion engine. A dirty or poorly adjusted spark plug will cause an engine to mis-fire, or fail to run.

  • Crookes tube. Invented by William Crookes (1832 - 1919) in the late 19th century. This apparatus was used to investigate the path taken by electrons or cathode rays as they were called then. In this experiment the electrons are emitted from a central disc towards the glass. As the electrons collide with the glass they fluoresce. The metal star pattern blocks the electrons causing a shadow on the glass. Crookes showed from the resulting shadow that electrons travel in straight lines. The overall glow of the apparatus is caused by the excitation of the remaining gas molecules in the tube.
